Hundreds of style enthusiasts braved the chilly weather to witness the electrifying Afroworld Fashion Show on Tempe's SDFC fields! Kicking off right at 5 p.m., guests strutted past velvet ropes to snag a front-row seat to this dazzling display of culture and fashion.
Fresh off the heels of their viral Fake African Wedding on TikTok, the African Student Association at ASU is serving up another spectacle that's bound to capture your likes and shares!
Meet Tami Balogun, a powerhouse freshman and key organizer from the Black African Coalition, who’s on a mission to showcase the vibrant elegance of African culture. Her goal? To shatter stereotypes and flaunt the breathtaking beauty of African fashion.
With a lineup featuring authentic food, soul-stirring spoken word poetry, and high-energy dance performances, the main event was a grand showcase of 10 unique designers. Simply Italian LLC left jaws dropping with stunning designs that champion traditional African wear. Designer Banke Balogun exclaims, "Uniqueness is the name... we come out really different; we come out really unique and beautiful."
But hold up, it’s not just about jaw-dropping style – the show spotlighted the crucial intersection of cultural diversity and sustainability. Anisa Botros, repping the Sudanese American Association, shared insights on how handmade African fashion trumps mass-produced Western attire.
Sophomore Sophia Smith highlighted the powerful impact of such events, bringing African-American culture to life at a predominantly white institution. "I just love being with my people," she said. And she’s not alone – students from all ASU campuses flocked to celebrate and showcase their rich heritage.
Kaiya King, a passionate nursing student who attended for the second year, said, "It’s just a way for us to speak our truth." And speak they did, through every piece of clothing and every morsel of food.
